Kids can always be a tough subject to photograph, especially when they know your trying to take their picture. My boys hate it when I try to take their picture and I have always been unsuccessful in putting together those family portraits for the holiday season.

In this exploration I have chosen kids as the subject and have put together some of the pictures that stand out the most from my collection. These are the pictures that demonstrate the wonderment, curiosity and joyfulness that kids have and in the case of my kids sometimes just plane stubbornness.

Going back through some older photos I have discovered new opportunities to post process them in either Silver Efex Pro or using different vsco film presets. I have been constantly looking at old images and thinking about updating them with some of these new tools.

 Sulking - Nikon D90, Nikkor 50mm - ISO 250, f/2.5, 1/1250 sec

Take the image above. For this picture I used my Nikon D90 and a Nikkor 50mm f1.8 lens. It was a real simple shot of my youngest sulking because we made him get out of the water. Looking back on the image the lighting suggested that it would do well converted to black and white. After some Silver Efex magic and a little selective color (blue for the mask) wah-la, a new image was born, and at least for me, provides an almost pure like exposure and captured his personality perfectly.

I have created two sets, black and white images and then some color images. Out of all of my photos these represent the ones I am most fond of when it comes to kid shots.

In Color

It can be challenging to decide between color and black and white and even though I have a soft spot for black and white photography, color photos of kids often times provide a better capture of the emotion and mood of the given shot.

To be honest I wish I had taken up photography a long time ago when my kids were younger so that I had some of those precious memories captured.
